人生处处面临选择 如何选择是关键

This simple picturerepresents a situation that every person must face: when approaching ajunction, which direction should one choose?  

Most viewers canempathize with the sense of hesitation and uncertainty embodied in such animage. Without exception, everyone has to make choices in life, whether theyconcern school, career, or love. While some choices are simple, one cannotavoid the task of making difficult decisions.     

Choices are oftendirectly related to one's happiness. University students,for example, face ahard and crucial decision upon graduating. Many students have difficultydeciding whether to continue studying or begin developing a career. Everyindividual is different, and one must take the factors of one's personal lifeinto consideration. In addition to an awareness of specific circumstances,however, making the right choice also depends on correct appraisal ofoneself.    

In order to choosecorrectly, therefore, one must be both realistic and selfaware.Furthermore, once having made a decision, one should seriously accept andpursue the path one has chosen, and strive towards the realization of one'sgoal with spirit.

We can see in thepicture, a great Egyptian Pyramid towering magnificently into the sky. At firstsight visitors may be overwhelmed by the pyramid and cannot help but marvel atthe huge stones in front of them — the embodiment of patience and endurance of anAncient Egyptian Civilization. During this extended period of building, one canonly imagine the amount of patience and endurance that was required by thepeople before any of this greatness was to be achieved.      

The stones of thepyramid remind us of a famous saying: “Rome was not built in a day,” that is,great things are never done without much time and labor.     As human beings, we are eager to winmerits for ourselves. It is, however, onlypatience as well as endurance thatcan help us to succeed in performing great deeds. In the case of Si Maqian,without those brilliant qualities mentioned above, he could never attain suchgreat achievements. Difficulties are unavoidable, unless we do not engage inanything at all. In the end, it is patience and endurance that counts.     Some people would give up halfway in theface of what seems to be insurmountable. Men of such a type can hardly expectto succeed. We must take a stepbystep approach to accomplish everything until we get the finalresult. The reason is very simple: if one attempts to climb a mountain, howeverhigh he reaches, he has failed if he does not reach the top.

As can be seen fromthe drawings, the father has planted a small tree thatgrows into a big one andis left to his son to enjoy. Years later, his son sits under the big treeenjoying its shade.     

In socialdevelopment, we should not over utilize our natural resources, as in the caseof forests. A reasonable use of forests and reforestation are the best choicesin the long  run. Human beings shouldplan ahead when it comes to social development. Even though trees are in shortdemand today, we must still keep      

the deforestationunder control, for we do not want to eliminate all of our forests, which areessential to our existence. Reforestation is another wise practice. We may notfully benefit from planting trees for the time being, but we must continuedoing so, since it will benefit later generations.       

From the point ofview of sustainable development, we have the responsibility to ensure thatfuture generations have enough natural resources to use and arenot penalizedfor the shortsightedness of present day decision makers. In otherwords, weshould not use up our natural resources just to meet our own present day needs,while ignoring the future of our planet.

This cartoon issilly, and yet compelling: a large customer holds a hopelessly small piece ofcloth as the tailor carefully measures. Such an image suggests that one needsto consider practical reality in the pursuance of goals. Merely acting on one'sdesires, while ignoring the facts at hand, cannot lead to success.    

The fact thatcurrently there are more graduates than jobs reminds us of the importance ofrational thinking. Every year approximately 3 million students graduatefrom  universities and begin looking forwork. Many of them fail to find suitable employment because there are simplynot enough opportunities to accommodate such great numbers of graduates. Inaddition, however, one might also cite flawed individual assessment as areason.   

In order to create arealistic target for one's future, one must make rational decisions and prepareaccordingly. A student who aims to be a surgeon, for example, must take care toacquire opportunities to do clinical practice and gain sufficient knowledge. Inother words, customers would do well to take accurate measurements beforepurchasing their fabric. A small piece of cloth cannot adequately clothe alarge person.
