Some people think that in the modern world, getting old is entirely bad. However, others think that life of the elderly in modern world is much easier than in the past.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

As is considered by some people, getting old is not an enjoyable experience in modern society dominated by technology, while others do believe the development of science in contemporary society has virtually benefited the old in many ways.

Thanks to the omnipresence of high-tech in modern society, the senior citizens’ rich experience is no longer treasured, which brings down the sense of achievement and belonging. In the old times, although the old are not as energetic as young people, societies have often valued them for their accumulated skills, knowledge, and wisdom. However, modern tech completely changed the situation with no return. Considering the factual knowledge, an old person may know more than the young people, but he can never know as much as Google or Wikipedia. Why would a young person turn to the older for help in case he can get the answer within 10 seconds by flip clicking on the web? Also, the life experience are taught and shared on the World Wide Web by communicative work. Even their grandchildren have abundant choices of bedtime story on line. Since the human being has escaped from basic living needs for centuries; instead, the feeling of being needed has served as the value of retirement life. When the intelligence of senior citizen being replace by computer intelligence in modern age, the old are despair of their retired life.

On the flip side, the potential of modern lifestyle to help the older people renew or develop social contacts and to actively engage in their communities cannot be neglected. The belief that modern technology is a good thing per se also exists amongst older people. Once the value of modern tech being demonstrated in concrete terms, the retiring life will become a new start of second half of the whole life. For example, they can develop new skills and interest via internet, and extend their social networking by join the online and offline activities. Recently, several aged men with great body build are becoming internet celebrities, and this encouraged the young and mid aged people. What’s more, old citizens can connect to their family members living on the other side of the globe using Skype, which cannot be imagined before. Life is greatly enriched in modern society for old people.

In my opinion, the modern society can be viewed as the double-edged sword, which means that it has both advantages and disadvantages for the old people, compared with the past. Whether the old people will benefit or frustrated by the modern lifestyle is according to their own will and the society’s environment.
