Many young people leave school with negative attitudes towards learning.

Why? What can be done to encourage positive attitude to learning in young people?

Many high schoolers despise or even hate study after they leave school; the reason of it is multifaceted, however, the learning environment and the way knowledge is conveyed in school are certainly to blame. Educators should take immediate action to address the attitudinal issue so that students graduate with life-long learning interests.

The top reason of school leaver’s negative manner towards learning is undoubtable the atmosphere of school. By which I mean both physical and supervisory settings. It is almost a consensus that all educational institutions are prisons which block the innovation and motivation of real leaning in one cubic meter, or even strangle the sprouting of them. Just think about the normal schools in China: every cubic school building is stuffed with block-shaped classroom and decorated with standardized squares (window, blackboard and desktop); is there any difference compared with imprisonment? Not to say the stone faced deans who know no flexibility and empathy. If these are still endurable, the stiff lecture is indubitably the chief culprit of positive learning attitude. This can be well illustrated by most of the disciplines in China – cramming math and science, memorizing literature and language arts, brainwashing history and politics- no wonder students are fed up with study. If education is all about listening to teachers and aiming at high score, school is doomed to become a place where the love of learning died.

To solve the problems, educational sector and school must face the elephant in the room. They may commence with converting the environment to make it nourish curiosity of learning. Take Reggio Emilia Approach (an Italian educational philosophy focused on preschool and primary schools) for example, they encourage all creative and natural way of school design which reflects their tradition and culture. The environment can serve as a third teacher when set encouragingly. Learning itself is a great activity if not crushed with wrong approaches of teaching. Thus, another way to nurture love of learning is to make it a source of enjoyment. Teachers who are committed to fostering youngster with creativity, critical thinking and life-long learning ability should be the ones themselves, and encircle every possible method that lead to the positive result. That is to say, discard the obsolete exam based learning, and inspire students to learn for pleasure and become active learners. Project based learning, case study and hands on activities are some of the practical methods.

All in all, with the current situation –boring environment and classes- in school, it is easy for young people to develop an aversion to learning. However, when action is taken for improvement, half the battle is won. Learning is human nature, just do not shadow it with nonsenses.
